Equitix Management Services (EMS) has supported the successful handback of Dalmuir Wastewater Treatment Works to Scottish Water, following 11 years of partnership, oversight and long-term management support on one of Scotland’s key wastewater assets.
The site was operated under a long-term PFI contract with Scottish Water through Scotia Water Dalmuir Limited, whose shareholders are Saur Group and Equitix. Throughout the concession, EMS provided management services to support governance, performance oversight, risk management and coordination between partners.
Dalmuir Wastewater Treatment Works is a major regional facility, serving a catchment of approximately 200 square miles and processing around 375,000m³ of wastewater per day. During the contract, the site underwent significant investment and modernisation, including secondary treatment and odour control systems, capacity and process improvements, sludge treatment, nitrifying filtration, fine screening and operational technology upgrades.
At handback, the site had achieved more than three consecutive years of full compliance with Scottish Environmental Protection Agency standards: a notable milestone for a complex and historically significant facility. Strong safety performance was also maintained through ISO-certified management systems, workforce training, continuous improvement programmes and robust contractor oversight.
Richard Knight, CEO of Equitix Management Services, said:
“EMS has been proud to support the successful delivery and management of the Dalmuir Wastewater Treatment Works contract, working closely with Saur Glasgow, Scottish Water and wider stakeholders to help ensure the site remained safe, compliant and resilient. The plant’s strong environmental and operational performance reflects the dedication and expertise of everyone involved. As the site enters its next phase under Scottish Water, we are pleased to have played a part in a partnership that has delivered essential services for hundreds of thousands of people across the region.”
Plant Director Angele Tejeiro at Saur also commented,
“Dalmuir is an operationally demanding and historically unique site. Successfully managing and modernising it over several decades has required technical expertise, resilience and a highly committed team. We are proud to hand the site back to Scottish Water in a robust condition, with enhanced capability and a strong compliance record. This reflects the sustained investment made and the professionalism of our workforce.”
At the handover ceremony, Alex Plant, CEO of Scottish Water, thanked EMS, Saur and their supply chains for their support in achieving a successful handback and launching the plant’s next phase. He emphasised that the value of partnership should never be overlooked, and that this facility will continue to deliver outcomes we can all be proud of.
Dalmuir Wastewater Treatment Works now transitions into its next phase under Scottish Water, with a strengthened operational platform to meet future environmental and service demands.
