Birmingham Highways is one of Europe’s largest local authority highway projects and incorporates all aspects of highways and infrastructure maintenance as part of the PFI.

The Birmingham Highway PFI involves the maintenance and management of the Birmingham City Council highways network and infrastructure; including approximately 2,600km of carriageways, 5,200km of footways, 600 traffic signals, 76,000 highway trees, 96,000 street lights, 850 highway structures and 3 city tunnels.

EMS is leading a complex and extensive £1.2 billion restructuring and procurement exercise. In addition to routine and reactive maintenance, the project also includes major programmed maintenance and investment such as street lighting and traffic signal replacement, refurbishment of bridges, structures and tunnels, and carriageway/footway resurfacing.
